living room relaxation.

bring on the color.

If you only take away one tip today, let it be this: do not be afraid of color! For a very long time, I was certain that my future home would exclusively include neutrals with a pop of color here and there. Flash forward to today and you will see that the living room in my apartment is quite different from that vision! Who knew that a dusty rose couch and a light purple rug would be the perfect combination for my space?

This amount of color is not for everyone, but for us, it felt natural to have such vibrant shades once the room started to come together. There is a trick to making all of these colors blend to create a cohesive room, and I will share it with you at the end!

unique look with common items.

Despite the room's unique touches, many of the items in the room can be found online in stores such as Amazon. Unfortunately, our puppy named Lottie IS one-of-a-kind; I would recommend her to everyone if there were replicas of her!

The best part about home decoration is taking objects that are commonly found and placing them in such a way that makes your place stand out. If five people had the exact same furniture and decor pieces that I have in this room, not a single one would look exactly the same. One reason I want to help people design a personalized room is to help them create a unique space that matches their individual vision! There are so many opportunities to get creative when designing a home. For example, to showcase a few wands from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Universal Studios, I purchased a set of two shelves. Only one was needed for that project, and the second one was the perfect place to display gems that we own.

tips for combining colors.

Here is the key to featuring several colors in a room: display a large piece of art or a tapestry that is made of many different shades! Having a colorful statement piece allows for varied colors throughout the room that match. Combining a soft purple rug with bright yellow and muted red pillows would have been difficult without the tapestry pictured above. Each of these colors can be found in the wall hanging, which makes the diverse color palette look effortless.

One way to brighten a room without using a busy piece of art is by adding a colorful furniture piece. In the living room area above, a blue antique coffee table and a pink velvet couch make the space more interesting to look at. This is a wonderful option for people that only want a little bit of color added to a space rather than a mix of different colors.

Even adding color and patterns in little ways can change the personality of the room. The coffee table above was found at an antique store, and it was perfect for our room with the exception of the handles; the drawer is double sided and one side was missing a handle. This was a great opportunity to customize a piece of furniture that was already unique, and we found two beautiful marble handles at the craft store! A small change made the coffee table our own, even though it previously belonged to someone else.
